Using Facial Recognition to Combat Human Trafficking – One Face At a Time

By Clearview AI BLOG

January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month – a time to shine a light on one of the most pressing global human rights issues of the 21st century. According to the International Labour Organization, over 40 million people are currently victims of human trafficking worldwide. While this issue has traditionally been difficult to tackle, technological advances are providing law enforcement agencies with powerful tools to identify and disrupt human trafficking networks. One such tool—facial recognition technology—has emerged as a game-changer in identifying traffickers, rescuing victims, and uncovering trafficking operations online.

At Clearview AI, we are dedicated to using facial recognition technology to help law enforcement agencies combat human trafficking. Facial recognition can serve as a vital piece of the puzzle, providing investigators with the ability to identify suspects, uncover hidden networks, and recover vulnerable individuals who are often hidden in plain sight.

THE ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATIONS

Human trafficking has evolved in the digital age. Today, traffickers use online platforms to recruit victims, advertise services, and coordinate with other traffickers. This digital transformation makes traditional investigative methods—such as field surveillance and searches—less effective. However, facial recognition technology is helping investigators address these challenges by providing a way to quickly and accurately identify individuals involved in trafficking rings.

Facial recognition tools can analyze images associated with possible human trafficking —whether from social media, web ads, or other public platforms. Using this technology, law enforcement can attempt to match faces from trafficking ads with publicly available or law enforcement databases. Clearview AI’s platform works by analyzing a probe image’s unique facial features, which are then compared against billions of open-source publicly available images and law enforcement image databases (such as jail booking photos) - to find a match. Investigators can then compare images of unknown suspects and unidentified victims to these open-source publicly available images. This type of facial matching technology is invaluable in cases where traffickers try to conceal their identities or operate anonymously online, making it difficult for law enforcement to track them down through traditional investigative means.

UNMASKING TRAFFICKERS & IDENTIFYING VICTIMS

One of the greatest challenges in combating human trafficking is identifying both the traffickers and the victims they exploit. Traffickers often hide behind fake identities or manipulate vulnerable individuals into engaging in illegal activities under duress or coercion. Victims may not even realize they are being trafficked, or they may be too afraid to come forward.

Facial recognition technology offers a breakthrough in identifying traffickers hiding behind aliases or online personas. By matching images found in online ads or social media posts with image databases, like Clearview AI’s, investigators can identify traffickers operating under false identities. This allows law enforcement to not only identify the perpetrator, but also gain valuable insight into their online networks and methods.

Similarly, facial recognition can be used to identify victims. In many instances, trafficked individuals are photographed or filmed in online ads, often in compromising or controlled environments. Investigators can use facial recognition to cross-reference these images with legitimate social media profiles to locate the person and independently determine if they are a victim of trafficking. If a match is found, authorities can intervene and offer support, potentially saving a life.

REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS: SUCCESS STORIES IN FIGHTING HUMAN TRAFFICKING

There are already several examples of Clearview AI’s facial recognition technology being used to uncover human trafficking operations. For example, the Reno (NV) Police Department used Clearview AI’s platform to identify and recover a minor from her trafficker before she moved from Reno to other major cities. She was identified and recovered by investigators and her trafficker was apprehended. She spent several months of treatment in an out-of-state care facility and follow-up services, but by her 18th birthday in May of 2021, she was in the trauma recovery process and was holding down a stable job.

Similarly, in other parts of the world, facial recognition has been instrumental in identifying traffickers who have used online platforms to advertise illegal services. Investigators can track these advertisements back to their source, identify individuals associated with the accounts, and use this information to disrupt trafficking rings.

These examples highlight how facial recognition is not just a tool for identifying perpetrators; it can also play a critical role in recovering victims and preventing future crimes. By identifying victims, investigators can help them safely escape the traffickers and receive the support and resources they need to move forward with their lives.

THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY IN HUMAN TRAFFICKING INVESTIGATIONS

The future of facial recognition in human trafficking investigations looks promising. As technology continues to improve, we anticipate even more powerful and efficient tools to detect, and apprehend traffickers. The hope is that, in the not-too-distant future, this technology can help bring an end to the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by disrupting criminal networks and enabling faster intervention for victims.

Human trafficking is an issue that affects millions of people globally, but because of advancements in technology, there is hope. Facial recognition technology has already proven to be one of the critical tools in identifying traffickers, uncovering hidden networks, and rescuing victims. As we observe Human Trafficking Awareness Month, it’s important to acknowledge how far we’ve come in the fight against this global crisis—and how much further we still need to go by continuing to innovate and use technology for good.

At Clearview AI, we remain committed to supporting the efforts of government and law enforcement agencies. Through the power of technology, we can help bring victims home — one face at a time.
